This is a business specifically focused on cleaning oriental and other fine rugs. They wash them in a large pan and then hang them to dry. In my relatively uninformed opinion I think this is the way wool or silk carpets should be cleaned. It's not cheap, but the results are excellent and I believe contribute to the life of the rug.
