Steam Sweepers Rug Cleaning was established in 1996 by founder, Art Thomas. For nearly 30 years, oriental rug washing and restoration has been our passion. We have mastered the art of cold-water immersion washing, a centuries old process that has allowed us to deeply clean and properly restore the thousands of rugs that have passed through our family business.

Being the only Oriental and specialty area rug washing facility north of Seattle, we service Whatcom, Skagit and Island Counties. Although based in Bellingham, WA, we also offer our pickup and delivery services to the surrounding area.

We pride ourselves not only on providing expert rug restoration, but also being a family- operated and local business. After 26 years of owning, operating, and managing Steam Sweepers, Art Thomas is passing the full-time reins to his son, Bryan Thomas. Art will still be active in consulting and overseeing business operations, but also plans to enjoy his well-earned retirement.

Family History & Owner

Many returning customers will recognize Bryan from the years spent working under his dad at Steam Sweepers. Ever since he was young, he has been learning and mastering the art of rug cleaning and restoration. Like Art, Bryan has a deep appreciation for the history that each rug and customer has to offer. Whether it be a synthetic woven shag rug from Costco or a very fine high end 100-year-old Persian rug, each rug has a story and requires specialized care and treatment.

Bryan grew up in the Bellingham area and graduated from Western Washington University. He recognizes the importance that small local businesses, like Steam Sweepers, have in the community. Bryan especially values the interactions that he gets to have with each customer. Whether greeting you at the shop, providing an estimate, dropping off during a delivery, or following up with a phone call, Bryan is involved with each customer interaction.

Outside of work, Bryan enjoys the outdoors. Whether it's camping up highway 20 or just being out in the garden. You might also find him working on his golf swing at some of the local courses.

Impeccable workmanship, and down-to-earth friendly service. I had three large area rugs cleaned by the ingenious water bath process and I don't know how I could possibly be more satisfied. The rugs are dark in color so I never really knew how dirty they were until I had them cleaned. It's like having brand new rugs! I have this wall hanging that my late mother made probably 50 years ago. It has great sentimental value for me. It was in dire need of cleaning, most of the border was dark gray with dirt. I took it to a dry cleaners but after having it for a week they decided they didn't want to risk cleaning it in fear of it falling apart. They did refer me to Steam Sweepers. Transparent I needed a small woven rug that had been hanging in a bathroom to be sanitized and to have odors removed. At the business you can watch the cleaning process in action. In addition, the business wanted me to know beforehand about potential hazards of cleaning such as color drift or warping. In the end, the wool rug was color-fast and no further warping occurred due to washing, however the sanitation process did not remove all of the odors.

I had a large area rug that had been given to me by a relative. It was old, and it had not been cleaned for quite some time. I wanted a carpet cleaning company that used the cold water immersion cleaning method, and I got on the internet to find one. The only company that used that method was Steam Sweepers LLC. Adam was amazing. He came to our house and asked several questions about how the rugs had been used. He gave us a detailed description of one rug we are hoping to sell. He quoted us 2 weeks for the turnaround, but he brought them back cleaned in about a week and a half. He took photos for us of the rug we are hoping to sell and he rolled it around a tube and wrapped it in plastic to prepare it for shipping. Would highly recommend Steam Sweepers. Everyone is so personable and professional! Steam Sweepers LLC has done work for me numerous times. This last time I had their technicians come out to pick up a couple of area rugs at my home. They cleaned them at their facility and returned them back to me. The company's turnaround time is one week which seems reasonable. I heard that they are a little bit higher priced than other companies, but I feel for the quality of work you receive from them that they offer fair pricing. Steam Sweepers LLC cleaned five rugs for me and did a fantastic job! My rugs look better than when I purchased them. Four of my rugs are vintage wool and the colors came out clean and crisp. I am very pleased that none of the colors faded or ran. They really know what they are doing. I will recommend them to everyone who comments on my rugs. They are brighter than they were before and so soft. They use a chemical process that does not include optical cleaners and that was very important to me. They do full immersion rug cleaning and that is hard to find. Their website was very informative about the process they use and they were so easy to find. I looked at other companies online, but I chose Steam Sweepers LLC because the website was so detailed and when I called they took time to explain their cleaning process to me. They were extremely professional and prompt. The pickup and delivery were right on time.

We had the honor of washing this rare, antique rug at our facility. Mohtasham Kashan rugs are the rarest of rugs handwoven in the city of Kashan. These rugs are named for the rug weaver, Mothasham, who is credited with developing the technique that this rug was woven. We estimate that this rug in particular was woven in the mid 1800s. Patty was a first time customer who had her rugs cleaned by other rug cleaners but wasn't fully satisfied with the results. She loved the thoroughness of the process for her Tibetian rugs. We successfully cleaned 7 rugs and she was thrilled with the softness and how it preserved the beauty and value.
